With the heart of Winter approaching, perhaps it’s a good idea to beef up against the germs. Not sure if you got your flu shot yet or not, but this tonic will definitely help your immune system. It’s also rather delicious with its pungent, sour, yet also sweet and warm flavor all wrapped into one. It is as good for you as it is comforting. To keep yourself going strong, drink daily in Winter and Spring. If you feel you have a cold coming on, sip throughout the day. Ginger is known for its capacity to heal, warm, nurture and restore.
This recipe was given to us by the oldest person we know on Maui, who swears by this cold-busting tonic. She claims it’s what has kept her alive all these many moons, especially through flu season. She also mentioned having to climb up to the top of Ia’o Needle for a sprig of rock moss… and to gather pure untouched rain water. But, let us assure you – this recipe will still work its magic even without those incredible extra ingredients. Enjoy and stay healthy!
- 1 inch piece fresh ginger
- 4 cups water
- 1 juice lemon
- 2 Tbsp raw honey
Peel and chop ginger into large chunks and place into pot with boiling water. Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 minutes with the cover on. Turn off heat and steep for another 5 minutes.
Then add the lemon juice. Strain the tea and toss out the ginger pieces.
Stir in the honey. Pour into mug and enjoy!
If you don't have fresh ginger on hand, stir 1/2 tsp. ground ginger into warm water until you get the heat you seek.
